Project/Unit description/Expedition.
In this lesson students are an author/illustrator writing a book about members of your family. With their art, they will tell the story of their family as a picture. their picture may include brothers and sister, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, pets, and anyone else they feel is part of your family. As an Illustrator they must create a background for their family portrait, which may be a favorite place, their home, or a special location they like. By creating this image they will share their family with the rest of the class and share what makes their family portrait unique.
In today's learning experience students will observe examples of family portraits and the stories they tell and then design their own family portrait. They will explore the different characteristics and possibilities while using acrylic paint and use this medium to create their image.
Essential Understanding.
Artists observe and explore with ideas and materials to create art
Inquiry/Learning target.
Using paint, Students will be able to experiment with paint mixing and techniques and explain their discoveries.
Key Concept(s).

Explore
Create
Skill(s).
Observing and identifying stories when looking at others artwork.
Generating ideas to create their personal family stories.
Reflecting and discussing their own artwork with others.
Art Focus.
Students will focus on creating a personalized family portrait while investigating and exploring new techniques that can be used with acrylic paint.
Literacy Focus.
Students will converse about what an author and illustrators roles are. After observing examples of artists family portraits, they will discuss what kinds of stories are being told by the artists. They will also discuss their finished family portraits and how they show their individuality
Documentation.
In today’s lesson, students explored color and materials. They discussed the identities and properties of the primary colors for the first time. Students also experimented with color mixing in order to produce the secondary colors of orange, purple and green. In preparation for independent work, we learned about different painting techniques and brushwork, as well as classroom painting etiquette and practices. The kindergartners will revisit these topics regularly in the course of this unit. After the students had practiced with the techniques and materials, they used their skills and knowledge to produce representations of members of their families or subjects of personal interest and objects and settings related to those figures. They produced some great work, and learned and had a lot of fun in the process.

Students watched a demo that Howard gave showing how to use paint to depict his family and helped come up with ideas on what may be included in his image.
|
Students then were able to explore the paint in their sketchbooks and identify which primary colors mixed to create secondary colors.
|
This student explored mark making, color mixing and overlapping paints. He was able to use more water with his paint to create a thin layer over top of his original marks.
|
There was a great moment in the class where one student asked out loud how to make purple, and another student at the next table was able to answer without any help from the teachers. It was great first of all, to see that the student could identify the colors needed and second, that the kindergartners were using each other for answers and able to work together to get the solution they needed without the teacher.
In this video one of the students explored brush techniques and colors. He was able to successfully discuss how he mixed and created certain colors.
|
This video displays one student exploring different mark making with her paint brush. She shows how she made the dot pattern and can also correctly discuss how she made her chosen color.
|
These images show the students work after they finished their exploration of color mixing and brush techniques in their sketchbooks. They used what they learned in class and attempted to show the story of their family and ideas on what their family may mean to them through their art using the paints. Some students were able to depict certain characters (A and B), while others showed more shapes and filled the space with color (C and D). At the end of class students were able to identify what the outcome of different color combinations would be and discuss how they used different marks in their work.
