Project/Unit description/Expedition.
In this lesson students are artists who have been given the task to explore the medium of paint in as many ways as they can think of. Their job as a paint adventurer will be to discover new marks and colors and examine how they differ on light and dark paper to share with their peers. They will investigate new 'brush' tools and find ways to make new marks using these new implements and create their images first on light paper and then on dark paper.
In today's learning experience students will build off of the last lesson and continue to explore more deeply color mixing and mark making techniques provided new brush implements. They will observe how colors differ on light vs dark paper using acrylic paint.
Essential Understanding. Artists observe and explore ideas and materials to create art.
Inquiry/Learning target.
Using paint, Students will be able to use primary and complementary colors and continue to experiment with paint mixing and mark making techniques using new brush implements. they will be able to explain their discoveries on their uses of paint on light and dark paper.
Key Concept(s).
Observe
Explore
Create
Skill(s).
Observing and identifying colors used in artists artowrks and how they made those colors.
Using primary and complementary colors.
Reflecting and discussing their own artwork with others.
Art Focus.
Students will focus more extensively on exploring color mixing and mark making using new brush implements and how they appear on light vs dark paper.
Literacy Focus.
Students will understand primary and complementary colors and be able to discuss how they produced certain colors. They will discuss how they made new marks and be able to communicate how their colors were affected by the light and dark paper.
Documentation.
In today's lesson, students went further into depth on their explorations of color and mark making techniques using acrylic paints. Students began by looking at a few famous artists works and examining the colors they used and possible techniques for making the marks in the works that were similar to what we had been exploring. They revisited their knowledge of primary and how they can produce secondary colors and proper painting etiquette and practices used in the classroom. Students were also given new brush implements to create new marks and metallic acrylic paint to push their experimentation. The students were first given a sheet of white paper and upon completion were then given a sheet of black paper. They were instructed to explore in order to observe the differences seen with the paints on the light vs the dark paper. They were able to create many new marks, colors, and create some very interesting abstract paintings using the light and dark paper.

Students were given a set up at their table similar to last lesson. They were each given their sheet of paper, water, paper plates for mixing and a plate with shared paints for the table. New to the table this lesson was the new brush implements to make marks and the introduction of metallic paints.
|
Students were first given the white sheet of paper to create their image.
In this image, the student experimented with using more water which thinned out the paint.
|
This student used each of the new brush implements and was able to discuss where and how she made the different marks with them.
|
In this image the student layered different paints over the previous color, creating an interesting composition.
|
It was great seeing the students able to discuss how they made marks on their papers and what specific tools they used. They enjoyed using the metallic paints and were able to discuss how it made the paint more "shiny" and "sparkly!"
When asked about the marks made using the stick brush they described them as "scratchy marks and scraped the paint."

|
This student was asked about how they made marks on their paper and she was able to respond describing her learning using the new stick brush. She was able to describe and show us the kind of marks it made and how she used it. |
This student was exploring different marks using the sponge brush and was able to show how he used it to repeat those marks. He also explored with layering and mixing paint with the previously painted layers. |
|
Next the students were given the sheet of black paper to continue exploring and see the difference of paint on a dark background.
This student used several darker colors and then layered brighter colors, like the yellow, over top. They showed how much more the bright colors pop on the darker paper.
|
In this image the student explored using darker paint on the dark paper and adding some metallic paint on top. He noticed how the darker paints did not stand out as much on the dark paper.
|
In this image the student also used a mixture of light and dark colors on the dark paper. They explored using the metallic paint with water and made a thin layer over the image using the thinned out metallic paint.
|
One student described his own image as a camouflage painting because he only used darker colors and they seemed to fade more into the black background. Another student made a realization while looking at another student's work at his table. He noticed that his image was darker because he was using dark paint and his partner's image used light colors on the dark paper and that made those colors stand out more.
In this video the student was able to discuss how she observed that the dark paper made the colors look darker as well. She used a lot of darker colors but described the colors she used to make the light blue which really stood out against the rest of the darker image. |
|
|
In this video the student did a great job comparing his image to the image of the student next to him. He clearly understood and could verbally describe why the the student painting next to him had an image that was lighter than his. He was using darker colors on his black paper, and she was using lighter colors. |
