Project/Unit description/Expedition.
In this lesson students are playing the role of artist exploring how to create colorful art using oil pastels. Their mission will be to explore the new medium in their sketchbooks and try to experiment new ways to use the pastels. After their experimentation and learning how to break down drawing figures using simple shapes, students will see if they can use the pastels to create an image of themselves doing something they like! examples include walking your dog, dancing, eating your favorite food, going to school.
Students will continue to explore new mediums moving on to oil pastels in this lesson. They will use their sketchbooks as a means of exploration to begin with. Students will also learn how to break down figures into simpler shapes to help illustrate their stories in a more realistic fashion. They will use the oil pastels and any discoveries they found in their sketchbooks to create an image of themselves.
Essential Understanding. Artists explore materials and solve problems as they create art.
Inquiry/Learning target.
Using oil pastels, students will learn how to use a new medium. They will understand how to illustrate figures and forms using simple shapes and use this knowledge to realistically depict themselves in a context of their choosing.
Key Concept(s).
Observe
Create
Exploration
Problem-solve
Skill(s).
Understanding how to work with oil pastels.
Observing and identifying shapes used in figurative forms.
Creating a figure using simple shapes.
Reflecting and discussing their own artwork with others.
Art Focus.
Students will focus on how to use simple shapes to illustrate figures in a more realistic way while becoming comfortable with a new medium, oil pastels.
Literacy Focus.
Students will be able to discuss new discoveries and techniques exploring a new medium. They will also be able to discuss their ideas and how shapes are used in artwork and can be used in drawing figures.
Documentation.
In today's lesson, students were introduced to a new medium, oil pastels. They were involved in a short discussion about the new medium and shown a few examples of how they can be used and then were able to take time to explore and make new discoveries with the new medium in their sketchbooks. After allowing them to become more comfortable with the pastels students were involved in a discussion on how shapes can be used to break down the human figure and make it easier to depict. Students observed artwork with people and picked out shapes that made up the figures. They used what they observed and used shapes to create an image of themselves in a context of their choosing using the oil pastels. Students did great thinking about how to use the shapes discussed and illustrated themselves in a more realistic way.

Students first used their sketchbooks to familiarize themselves with the new media and make new discoveries on how they could use the oil pastels. They were also given Popsicle sticks to use as a way to scratch into the pastels. Students layered pastels to create new colors, used the Popsicle sticks to scratch into the pastel layers, and explored stippling as a way to make marks. |
This student also experimented with layering, but explored first putting down a blue layer of pastel, then using his Popsicle stick to make scratches, and finally adding the top layer of the brownish red. He discovered that the marks he made with the Popsicle stick still showed through when the top layer was added. He repeated his experiment twice and go the same result both times! |

This student explored different pressures using the oil pastels. She used the red to make a long mark on her page and discussed how she used more red towards the bottom and less at the top of the mark. She was able to use more pressure to get more red, and less pressure to have a lighter mark. She explored a lot of line making and had a very energetic composition. |
Students then were asked to discuss what shapes make up the human figure. They were involved in a discussion and picked out shapes from provided examples of artwork by tracing them out on top of the image.
Using the artwork, students picked out circles and ovals for the figures head and hands, used squares and rectangles for their arms, legs, body and neck, and also noticed a triangle shape for the figures shoulder/collarbone area. The students observed how to put these shapes together on their own to show a figure and could think of the shapes and image when going back to their spots to create their own figure.
There was a great moment where one of the students was asking about drawing his legs, but he needed his legs to be bent not straight. He was asked instead of using one large rectangle, how could he still use the shapes but show his legs bent. He thought about it and replied that he could use two rectangles that came together to make his legs look like they were bent. Another student also made a great observation using the shapes to depict another element in a students image. One student wanted to depict himself riding a bike and was having a hard time illustrating the bicycle. He asked how to draw the seat and handle bars of a bicycle and another student at the table replied saying the seat is like a triangle and the handle bars are kind of like a circle cut in half. He did a great way of thinking about how the shapes were used in this form and could be used to make drawing a bike simpler.
In this video the student discusses her thought process on creating her image. The clip shows her talking about the shapes she used to create the image of herself. She describes using circles for the head and body and rectangles for the arm and legs. |
